Established in 1931, it is the biggest township in South Africa, SOWETO an acronym for SOuth WEst TOwnship and represents a collective of townships, situated South West of Johannesburg. Soweto was borne due to segregation laws enacted by the apartheid regime in 1903 and 1905. Soweto played a major role in the fight against apartheid.
